First PGA TOUR Win Always The Sweetest

martin lairdCongratulations to Martin Laird, winner of the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open event in Las Vegas! It was his first win on the PGA TOUR, defeating former UNLV star Chad Campbell and George McNeill on the third hole of a three man playoff.

I have been following Marty's career since he started dating my daughter-in-laws best friend Meagan. He has been a factor in a number of events since joining the Tour but this was his first win. Great player, great guy!

A Gym For The Brain?

Get Me OUTSIDE!

Get Me OUTSIDE!

I don't like treadmills in the spare bedroom, garage, working out at health clubs or other forms of indoor exercise,  other than they are boring, boring, boring, wall mounted TV or not. I don't care if Oprah has Michelle Obama, Tom Cruise, David Letterman, Ellen, Donald Trump and Tiger Woods on the same show! (wouldn't that be a show?), indoor workouts just don't work for me, even if I have a window to look out of.

If you ever wondered why your new year's resolution to exercise and lose weight lost it's momentum after only a few weeks here is a clue:

Hello! It's winter out there, cold, rainy, gloomy, etc. Your brain wants to be doing something outdoors, walking, hiking, just about anything as long as it's outside while your body cringes at the thought. Some refer to exercising outdoors as eco-therapy, or green exercise, although I think that word green is overused. Did you know for example that the color green balances the nervous system and is supposed to have a calm, soothing, effect?

When there isn't a whole lot of green around during winter where you live it can be tough to get motivated, much less stay that way until spring. But don't despair, just by seeking the natural world you can reap the benefits of re-connecting with the environment – a reduction in anger and stress levels only to mention a couple. Take the dog for a walk, bundle up and breathe the fresh air.

The Adjustable Driver – Shot Shaper Or Gimmick?

nike adjustableThat's the question us amateur golfers want to know! Before we go out and spend a bunch of our precious green-fee dollars on a new driver us 14-25 handicappers want to know if these things are worth the money.

The only way to find that out is to read what people such as Charlie King, Director of the Reynolds Golf Academy at Reynolds Plantation, in Greensboro, GA have to say about them. (see his article in the November issue of Golf Magazine) The other is to invite those golfers (amateurs only please)  who have actually used them in play – to take our poll concerning their usability – remedy or gimmick?

charlie kingBy the way, there is good news on the golf instruction front, Charlie King, one of Golf Magazine's Top 100 Teachers has a new golf instruction blog! I like his style and his inventive approach to golf instruction. So much so that one of these days (soon) I'm sending my friend the Golftrekker down to Reynolds Plantation disguised as a chubby, 60 year-old 15 handicapper with a nasty snap hook. If Mr. King can help this guy (with an adjustable driver or not) AND he guesses correctly that the aforementioned golfer is associated with the Golftrekker he will be honored on this blog with the LCGolfer's, Golf Instructor Of The Year award and be presented with a new Cadillac!  Sorry Charlie!  Just testing your sense of humor with the Cadillac thing.

On to the Poll!

V Grooves Are Not About Victory

V-GroovesWill someone please explain what the new "V" groove rules are supposed to accomplish? In 2010 the USGA "will limit groove edge sharpness on clubs with lofts equal to or greater than 25 degrees." Supposedly standard five-iron and higher on those golf clubs manufactured after 2010..

Phil-Mickelson-hits-his-t-001I happen to enjoy seeing the pro's check it up on the green out of the rough with a wedge or nine-iron. AND I am not alone in admiring those guys on tour considered "bombers" of the ball, guys like John Daly, Phil Mickelson, Anthony Kim and others. That's what a lot of golf fans are paying to see and they don't care if their drives end up in the fairway or not. (more…)
