In the first instance, a 2007 complaint launched an investigation by the Arizona Attorney General's Office's Civil Rights Division over the club's long-standing tradition of separate drinking and dining facilities for men and women members. After a protracted battle, the club ended up losing that one and opened up their dining facilities to all.

This time a female club member has filed suit in court, claiming that the club's board members breached their contract with her by taking full membership dues and failing to offer her the same services as men members.  She alleges that the club's female members are no longer able to play in tournaments. This lady decided she had had enough, resigned, and asked for her dues back. No way says the club.

My question to the board of Phoenix Country Club is, what is it about discrimination that you don't get? In this brave new world of political correctness you would think that these country clubbers would have it figured out by now. I have heard that most of the board there are attorneys and maybe that explains why they like to litigate so much but it must be costing the members plenty. Why not just give the lady back her money and get on with it?

Can anyone out there tell me why they would want another discrimination case lodged against them? Especially since they lost the first one! Does anyone out there feel that the club's board has a right to restrict ladies involvement in tournaments?

Golf Course Has The Most Amazing 19th Hole Ever Seen

If you had to pick just one guy to make a par on the world's longest par 3, for me, it would have to be Padraig Harrington. This tough Irish pro loves adverse playing conditions and even tougher golf courses. And he proved it by being the very first golfer to par the most bizarre par 3 hole golf hole I have ever seen! It's right out of Loyal H. Chapman, Fantasy Golf Holes series only this golf course and hole are real.

This hole they call the "19th" hole is part of the golf course at Legends Golf & Safari Resort , located on the Entabeni Safari Conservancy in the Waterberg Region of the Limpopo Province of South Africa. It's their signature hole and is officially the world’s longest and highest par three.

After playing a round on the featured golf course there you can elect to play their 19th hole. After reaching a teeing ground at the top of Hanglip Mountain (named for it's sheer dropoff and reachable only by helicopter), a dizzying 1,410 above the fairway, you are faced with some 830 metres or about 600 yards straight down to an African Continent shaped green. Hang time for a well-hit tee shot is estimated at between 25 and 30 seconds before either landing on the green or in the transition area surrounding the green.

Your average thrill-seeking golfer can play this golf course and bizarre hole in addition to the standard round of 18 holes, or as a stand-alone golf experience on its own, and a hole-in-one on this golf course will earn you one million US dollars! Mr. Harrington joins some esteemed company of well-known international golfers who have all designed holes at this golf course in Africa; Trevor Immelman, Bernard Langer, Colin Montgomerie, Justin Rose, Vijay Singh, K J Choi and Retief Goosen have each designed a hole at Legends GC.

NBC Sports Is "Plugged In" To PGA Golf!

Since only the high mucky mucks in the NBC Sports hierarchy were provided with parking passes to the TV compound adjacent to the golf course we had to get into the tournament the same way as the gallery riff-raff, which was to park in the mud, wait in line, take the shuttle bus up the hill and be wanded at the entrance for cell phones and cameras. Even our NBC credentials didn't get us a pass through this process until the last day when I decided, screw it, and I smuggled my little digital camera in my sock. As far as I know the pictures you will see here are exclusive, especially the ones of the NBC TV compound. I wanted my readers to get a look behind the scenes at a golf tournament.

The NBC Sports compound was located above the driving range just a short, but cardiac challenging walk from the golf course to the top of a mesa where camera crews, on course announcers and us lowlife spotters got their assignments and headed to the golf course, all riding in style in golf carts except us hardy spotters.

There were few Tiger Woods sightings over the four days of the event (at least by this spotter) other than this one at the presentation ceremony but I did see Elin out and about a number of times. However, after Saturday's round we did meet a Mastro's waiter at a local pub just before he left for work who noticed our NBC Sports caps and told us that Tiger Woods had made a dinner reservation for six in one of their private rooms. (I wonder who paid?) Thinking it would be a great story for the Spotter Hall Of Fame we speculated about how we would go about crashing it. As the beers went down each scenario was more hilarious than the one before. Surprisingly, this guy was willing to part with the inside info on just which room Tiger was to be but we laughingly declined. Besides, he wanted cash money for the information! Tiger will never know how close he came to meeting two of his biggest fans!

To make a long story short, the four days at Sherwood CC were very pleasant. Sunny every day, temp in the high 50's (but damp from previous rains) nice crew to work for (thanks to Steve Lee of NBC Sports), polite crowds, and super marshals. Everyone did a great job. Special thanks to John Kerr for setting it all up.

Here are some of the shots I took from my vantage point in the fairways, always being careful to stay back from the players far enough so that they could not hear the click of the camera shutter.  That would be the end of my days as a spotter! (It sure felt good to get that camera out of my sock!)
