V Grooves Are Not About Victory

V-GroovesWill someone please explain what the new "V" groove rules are supposed to accomplish? In 2010 the USGA "will limit groove edge sharpness on clubs with lofts equal to or greater than 25 degrees." Supposedly standard five-iron and higher on those golf clubs manufactured after 2010..

Phil-Mickelson-hits-his-t-001I happen to enjoy seeing the pro's check it up on the green out of the rough with a wedge or nine-iron. AND I am not alone in admiring those guys on tour considered "bombers" of the ball, guys like John Daly, Phil Mickelson, Anthony Kim and others. That's what a lot of golf fans are paying to see and they don't care if their drives end up in the fairway or not.

Other considerations:

Driving Accuracy No Longer A Factor?

The USGA thinks that certain grooves are causing these bombers of the ball to be less concerned about driving accuracy because they know that their grooved irons will get them out of trouble. I for one would not like to see these players laying off with the driver because they are afraid that if they hit it offline into the rough they won't be able to get the spin they need to hold the green? Anyone remember that little golf ditty, drive for show -putt for dough?

Shouldn't really matter much to the amateurs, they still need to make a good swing. Hitting a ball out of the rough is not just about grooves, I don't care how deep they are!

The chicken or the egg theory as it applies to golf…

Technology gave us grooves that would assist in shots from the rough.
Courses grew higher rough.
Technology invents V grooves to overcome that.
Course grows more snarly and deeper rough.
Technology invents…and so on.

I think you get the picture. So that brings up another golf world opinion poll fellow golfers: Tell us what you think of this rule change. Will it mean a new shift to driving accuracy, what Greg Norman refers to as the "art" of golf or will today's pro's still bomb it?
